Learning Seeds Engagement Strategies
Comic Strip by Cynthia Yuan Cheng
Challenging Moment: Individual children are not playing together because their physical positioning and orientation are limiting their engagement.
A Strategy to Try: Objects Make a Play Hub
Physically move the objects that a child is playing with — or invite the child to move on their own — to a more accessible and central location where children can join together in the play. Have them face one another with the planes of their chests and encourage eye contact. When individuals are playing separately, each with their own objects or ideas, encourage them to connect their play within a combined theme.
What Happens: Facing one another in proximity around a common set of objects, children are now much more likely to interact. They are well-positioned to engage in group pretend play.
