Slow Down the Leaving

Gently put the brakes on bolting from engaged activity.

Learning Seeds Engagement Strategies

Challenging Moment: The child is moving from activity to activity quickly without engaging in the activities.

A Strategy to Try: Slow Down the Leaving

As the child begins to leave or says "I am all done." the shadow can slow down the leaving by asking a question about the current activity or asking a question about where the child is going or what the child is doing next.

What Happens: The child...

  • has time to pause and re-engage in the current activity or to choose what the child will engage in next before they can leave the current activity.

  • is more likely to go to another activity and not simply bolt from the current one to no specific activity.
